How can the PTA help in areas of equity? Two key members of educational equity organizations delivered a scathing study on quality education, equal access, equity, and PTAs on November 14, 2020. The slides show that black and brown students are widely referred for bad behaviors and that they are underrepresented as students for the Advanced Academic Program.
“The Antiracism Seminar” was presented by Mike Woltz and Corey Haynes. Woltz is the NOVA District PTA Chair of Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach Committee; FCPS Title I Parent Advisory Committee Chair; Chair, Legal Redress Committee, Fairfax NAACP; Board member of Fairfax Antiracist Minds (FAM). Haynes is the Equity Lead, ESOL & AVID Teacher; Board member of Fairfax Antiracist Minds (FAM).
“Partnering With Parents For Racial Justice” was one of the topics which was covered in a slideshow study. The study delivered: a clear definition of racism, demographics of students and teachers in a county school system, representation of demographics in Advanced Academic Program Courses (lead to more advanced classes in later school), reported disruptive behaviors by demographics, PTA activities, and PTA responsibilities.
